Jonathan Monk LEICESTER, UK, b. 1969

Biography

Jonathan Monk combines joke and irony with precise references to the important artistic currents of the 20th century in a very personal way. In particular, the Conceptual and Minimal Art of the ‘60s and ‘70s are an essential point of origin for his work, in which he reproduces, reexamines and reformulates canonical works by ingenious and irreverent means. Through wall paintings, monochrome, ephemeral sculpture, and photography, Monk reflects on contemporary art’s tendency to devour references, paying homage to such figures as Sol LeWitt, Ed Ruscha, Bruce Nauman, and Lawrence Weiner, while simultaneously demystifying the creative process.

Jonathan Monk has had numerous solo exhibitions, including shows at IMMA, Dublin; CAC, Malaga; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; and ICA, London. His work has been featured in several major group shows, including the 2006 Whitney Biennial; the 50th and 53rd Venice Biennials in 2003 and 2009; the Berlin Biennial in 2001; and the Taipei Biennial in 2000. He was awarded the Prix du Quartier Des Bains, Geneva in 2012.

His work is present in many important public collections, such as Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Tate Collection, London; and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.
